With the debt crisis spreading to Hungary and pushing down euro to a new 4-year low, Asian and European markets tumbled today and triggered a heavy sell-off on the Indian bourses.
A weak close on Wall Street last Friday and disappointing jobs data also weighed in to a notable extent. The Sensex, which plunged to 16,686.73, ended at 16,795.86 (provisional) with a loss of 321.83 points or 1.88%. The Nifty closed at 5039.45, down 96.05 points or 1.87%.
Realty and metal stocks were among the worst hit. Oil, PSU, IT, bank, auto and capital goods stocks too suffered sharp losses. Midcap and smallcap stocks too were seen reeling under pressure. DLF lost over 6%. Hindalco, Tata Steel and Tata Motors ended lower by over 4%.
Sterlite, Bharti Airtel, ICICI Bank, SBI, HDFC, Jindal Steel, Infosys, Reliance Infra and RIL also declined sharply. SAIL, HCL Tech, BPCL, Cairn, Idea Cellular, Unitech, Axis Bank, Suzlon and Reliance Capital went down sharply. RComm ended more than 4.5% up. ACC, Ambuja Cements and Kotak Bank also closed on a positive note. The market breadth was weak right through the day.
